Confined Spaces

Why is working in a confined space more hazardous than working in other workplaces?
There are many factors to consider when looking for hazards in a confined space. There is a small margin for error; you don’t want to be wrong in evaluating potential hazards. This can have serious consequences.
In some cases, conditions in a confined space can be extremely hazardous and in other cases they can ·be life threatening. The variances and unpredictability are the problem, and this is why you need to carefully assess the situation.

Some factors may include:
The entrance/ exit may not allow the worker to get out in time if there was a flood or collapse.
The configuration of the confined space and usually small area does not always allow for an easy rescue.
Conditions can change very rapidly. The space outside the confined space can impact conditions on the inside and vice versa and the work process being carried out inside the confined space area.

See sample hazard recognition tool under the resource’s material at the top under the paperclip.  You do not have to print; this is for you to review and look over. The workplace can use and print this if they so choose.
