Goals

By the end of this module participants will learn how to safely handle and maintain a chainsaw

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

Explain the requirements of the Regulation for Construction Projects

(O.Reg 213/91) chainsaw training and protection.

Conduct safety inspections to identify components requiring maintenance and service.

Demonstrates techniques to start, transport, handle a chainsaw.

Describe the necessary techniques required to perform basic cutting and felling operations safely.

Describe basic saw operations, identifying safety hazards and ensuring all appropriate controls.

This guide is easy to follow and provides easy to follow safety tips including a brief description and pictures.

Understanding the OHSA and its Regulations in relation to the Chainsaw
In this section we will review the legal requirements for the Worker, Supervisor and the Employer in relation to the Chainsaw. Also we will review the Construction Regulations to show you the legal requirements made under the Regulations.

Safe Chainsaw Operation
In your workbooks Pages 11 -18 will discuss Safe Use and Operation of a Chainsaw.

Safe Cutting
In this section we will discuss Safe Cutting Rules, Felling a Tree, limbing, bucking and pruning.

Handling, Transportation and Storage of a Chainsaw
In this section we will review safe handling, transportation and Storage of a Chainsaw.

Chainsaw Maintenance
In this section we will talk about how to maintain your chainsaw. Including sharpening, adjusting chain tension, lubrication, things to watch out for such as saw pulling to one side while cutting, knowing when the chain is dull, understanding depth gauge, new chain rules, drive sprocket and knowing your chain length for replacement of a new chain.
