WHMIS 2015 (GHS)

Open up the attachment to this lesson.

Look at the Comparison Chart you will see how the old pictogram has changed or not changed to the new WHMIS 2015 GHS.

You will see some pictograms have not changed and stayed the same.

We will look at them all and see the comparisons and what the hazard pictogram represents now under the new WHMIS 2015 GHS system.

All pictograms under WHMIS 2015 GHS are diamond shape now, not round. Except one, the biohazard symbol has stayed round.

Class A has stayed the same, it is a picture of the cylinder and represents gases under pressure.

Class B has stayed the same, it is a picture of flames and represents all flammables, whether solid, liquid or gas. Keep away from ignition sources.

Class C has stayed the same, it is a picture of the O with the flames coming out of the top and represents Oxidizing Liquids, Gases and Solids. On its own does not burn, it needs to come into contact with something that does burn and when exposed to the air (oxygen) and start to smoke and smolder and ignite catching fire.

Class D1 has stayed the same, with the skull and crossbones representing poison. They have also added the Exclamation mark (NEW) these pictograms represent Acute Toxicity (Poison) Oral (Ingestion Hazard), Dermal (through the skin or eyes), and Inhalation.

Class D2 Chronic Poison (illness or disease can develop over time). These pictograms have both changed and are (NEW), the picture of the half body is representing the lungs and the exclamation mark. These pictograms represent Eye and Skin Irritation,  Skin or Respiratory Sensitization, Carcinogenicity (Cancer causing agent), Mutagenicity (can cause a genetic mutation) and Reproduction Hazard.

Class D3 Biohazardous Infectious Material has stayed the same with the 3 C’s chained together, you will notice that Biohazards is the only one that is not diamond shape it has stayed as a round symbol. This includes all Biohazardous Infectious Material. Examples: People coming to work sick, unclean washroom facilities, animal feces, aids, Hepatitis etc.

Class E Corrosive Materials has stayed the same with the two flasks being poured out over metal. Which means it can eat through metal or the skin or the eyes. This is caustic material and can burn the skin or eyes and also cause severe irritations to the skin or eyes.

Class F Dangerously Reactive has been changed (NEW). They will use two types of symbols for this class either the flames pictogram if it is flammable, or the bursting bomb symbol if it is explosive. These materials can react violently to being heated, shaken or dropped.

The Environmental Symbol- which is a picture of the lake and fish, we are not using in Canada as of yet, other countries have adopted this pictogram, but Canada so far has not adopted it.
